Mining Profitability (Scrypt) – January 2014

cryptocurrency is a type of digital currency that relies on cryptography, peer-to-peer networking and decentralization. In some cases a proof-of-work scheme is used to create and manage the currency.

List of Digital Currencies (Cryptocurrencies)

For a full list of digital currencies, see list of digital currencies at CoinWarz.com

Wallets

Coin wallet software has been implemented in several programming languages for personal computers, mobile devices, and as web applications. At the most basic a wallet program generates and stores private keys and communicates with peers on the coin network. When making a purchase with a mobile device, the use of QR codes to simplify transactions is ubiquitous. There are also now several server software implementations of the coin protocol. So-called “full” nodes on the network validate transactions and blocks they receive and relay them to connected peers.

Coin uses public-key cryptography, in which pairs of cryptographic keys, one public and one private, are generated. A collection of keys is called a wallet. Note that sometimes this term is used to mean the software itself in the sense of digital wallet. A coin transaction transfers ownership to a new address, an alphanumeric string of the form 1FfmbHfnpaZjKFvyi1okTjJJusN455paPH derived from public keys by application of a hash function and encoding scheme. The corresponding private keys act as a safeguard; a valid payment message from an address must contain the associated public key and a digital signature proving possession of the associated private key. Because anyone with a private key can spend all of the coins sent to the corresponding address, the essence of coin security is protection of private keys.

Mining Pools

Pooled mining is a mining approach where multiple generating clients contribute to the generation of a block, and then split the block reward according the contributed processing power. Pooled mining effectively reduces the granularity of the block generation reward, spreading it out more smoothly over time.

How to find mining pool?

Just type: [Cryptocurrency Name] + [Pool] in Google i.e. Doge Pool.

  • Create an account on the Pool
  • Set your Worker (user name and password)
  • Set your Payment Address = Your Coin Wallet Address
  • Use your Pool settings to write a batch (.bat) file, example is below.
  • Start your mining software using your Batch File, i.e. cgminer.
  • Check your Dashboard on the Pool (wait 30 minutes and compare hash rate to hash rate in cgminer)

Mining Software

Miners have a choice among several mining programs, for instance cgminer, BFGMiner, DiabloMiner, poclbm, and Phoenix. A more recent release of any one of them may contain a slightly more optimized version of the OpenCL-based mining program, while others may do a better job of auto-overclocking graphics cards. Some of these mining programs can also control FPGA-based mining hardware, or even the latest ASIC-based equipment. My recommendation is to use cgminer 3.7.2 (version 3.5.0 for Litecoins).

My cgminer setting for 4x Radeon HD 7990:

cgminer.exe –scrypt -o stratum+tcp://[server]:[port] -u [user] -p [password]  –intensity 13 -g 2 –thread-concurrency 8192

Download the latest version: cgminerBFGMinerDiabloMinerpoclbmPhoenix.

Mining Hardware

It is time to choose your hardware for Scrypt Mining Rig. Mining software will work on any computer running any version of Windows from XP to 8.1, Linux or Mac OS X. Don’t waste your money and power (Watts). You don’t need strong CPU, lots of memory, hard disk,  and definitely no need computer case!

The Best Rig suitable for 1-8 GPU’s:

  • Motherboard: ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0
  • CPU: AMD Sempron 145 (Single Core 2.8GHz)
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 1600MHz
  • SSD: Kingston 60GB SSDNow V300 or Pendrive USB 3.0
  • FAN: Sinbo 18inch Floor Fan (75W)
  • PSU: 80 Plus certified 1475-1600W (optional 2x 800W+)
  • Other: PCI-E Risers, Power Meter, LCD Thermometer

TOTAL PRICE: £500-560 (price not including Graphics Cards)

Graphics Cards –  how many hashes?

  • Statistics about the mining performance of various hardware used in a Mining Rig can be found here: Litecoin.info

How to pick the best PC Power Supply?

  • Look for units with “80 Plus” certification. Though the certification process isn’t especially stringent, 80 Plus-certified units are confirmed to be at least 80 percent efficient; and 80 Plus has tiers for even more-efficient units, including 80 Plus Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Titanium certifications. Power supplies in the higher certification tiers tend to command very high prices, however. All 80 Plus Power Supplies can be found here: 80plus.org
  • Do not exceed the maximum power! Buy Power Meter for only £10, check the Power Input Watts and compare to the Power Supply Input Wattage (find you PSU model here)

The Difficulty

The difficulty is the measure of how difficult it is to find a new block compared to the easiest it can ever be. It is recalculated every 2016 blocks to a value such that the previous 2016 blocks would have been generated in exactly two weeks had everyone been mining at this difficulty. This will yield, on average, one block every ten minutes. As more miners join, the rate of block creation will go up. As the rate of block generation goes up, the difficulty rises to compensate which will push the rate of block creation back down.

Please note that the difficulty can increase!
From the other hand a coin’s value can increase.

Assuming 20% income decreases every month but it is hard to predict the income for the next month.

4x Radeon HD 7990 Mining Monster Rig (8 GPUs)

Cryptocurrency is a type of digital currency that is based on cryptography. Cryptocurrency uses cryptography for security, making it difficult to counterfeit. Public and private keys are often used to transfer the currency from one person to another.

Cryptocurrency is considered a counter-culture movement related to cypherpunks, who advocate the use of cryptography as a route to social and political change. Cryptocurrency presents a form of this movement in that it is essentially a fiat currency, which means it only has value if people agree to such and use it as a medium of exchange. However, because it is not tied to any country, its value cannot be affected by a central bank. In the case of Bitcoin, the most prominent functioning example of cryptocurrency, its value is determined by supply and demand in the market. As such, this currency behaves much like gold and other precious metals.

Windows 8.1 Security Bug – This Is It!

This is a full story about a bug I found in September 20, 2012.
I participated in the Mitigation Bypass Bounty program and informed Microsoft about a bug in Windows Vista-8.1 and Windows Server 2008-2012 R2, but they ignored it.

Looking for the Weak Link

Looking for the Weak Link

A Weak Link

A Weak Link

We can use the Narrator from the Ease of Access Center in Windows 8.1
It can use a text-to-speech voice from other installed software.

Third-party Software

I will use IVONA Software, an award winning developer and provider of Text-to-Speech (TTS). January, 24th 2013 Amazon announced that it is acquiring Ivona.
You can download a free trial version here: http://www.ivona.com/en/voices/

Looking for a Bug

We would like the third-party software to show a message window on the Login Screen. Login Screen Bypass Theory:

  1. Some programs may display error messages when you try to use them in the wrong way. For example: change the system date to see activation window.
  2. If the error messages contain links try to run web browser.
  3. In IE, press the Alt key to display the Menu bar and click:
File > Open > Browse, or press Ctrl+O > Browse.
  4. Use web browser to browse the computer for desired program
    (Run as an Administrator)
  5. Done!

Looking for a Bug

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Change the system date to April 1st, 2013 or at least 30 days back.
  2. Download and install the IVONA 2 Text-to-Speech from: here
  3. Set the correct system date and time on your computer.
  4. Sign Out or Restart your Windows 8.1 system.
  5. Click the “Ease of Access option” icon on the Login Screen.
  6. You will see the following messages: “Ivona 2 Voice – Click to activate!” – click on it.
    Guide 1
  7. Click on “Buy now” link, it will run a web browser (IE, Chrome or other).
    Guide 2
  8. Important! Close the “IVONA Products Activation” window.
  9. In your browser, press: Ctrl+O > Browse.
     Guide 3
  10. Browse the computer for the program you want to run (run as an Administrator). This option is available in the context menu when you right-click on an executable file.
  11. You can use Task Manager (C:\Windows\System32\Taskmgr.exe) or Command Prompt (C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe) to start other programs.
    Guide 4
  12. It can be done remotely via Remote Desktop (i.e. TeamViewer).

The Limitations

  • Try to run only one program for better stability, if you run more this causes the programs to crash.
  • Some programs won’t start and causes an error.
    For example Control Panel (C:\Windows\System32\control.exe)
  • Some programs may work, but not as you expect.
    For example Windows Explorer (C:\Windows\explorer.exe)

Final Words

Is it Text-to-Speech Voice’s or Microsoft Narrator’s bug?

I think Microsoft overlooked that you have to pay for most of the TTS Voices. The activation window will pop up and this is not a bug!

And now a response from Microsoft:

Yes, this does appear to be a security bug in the third party speech software, which should not allow a user to leverage any function outside of the speech functionality without login.

But why Windows allows web browser (IE, Chrome or other) to start and access to data at the logon screen? Please feel free to leave your comments below!
